Patriots Daily: Meaning in Waiving Jack Jones; Bills Lose on MNF

Published

on

New England Patriots cornerback Jack Jones

Yesterday the New England Patriots waived cornerback Jack Jones. Based on how this season went, many argued New England would have been better off waiving him after his arrest over the summer. Or possibly after ‘commitment issues’ surfaced throughout this season.

Jones missed a team curfew and sulked on the bench away from his teammates while being benched. He also liked a post on X suggesting he’d be better off in jail than on the Patriots. Ultimately, the relationship between Jones and his Patriots reached its breaking point.

But what precedent did the New England Patriots set?

The team forgave a lot as long as Jack Jones contributed and the team played with something at stake. But now, their record stands at 2-8 and the team is out of contention, Jones was also playing poorly. The completion percentage throwing against Jones is 81.8% in 2023, up from 54.1% a year ago. In 2022 he had two interceptions (including a touchdown), a fumble recovery and a three tackles for loss. This season he has zeroes across the board in those categories.

Despite Jack Jones’ play slipping, his performance alone is not the primary reason for being waived. So, did something specific serve as the final straw? Or was this to show the “Patriot Way” still exists? If so, is it too little, too late to be a meaningful message to those still on the roster?

The full story about Jack Jones time in New England has yet to be told. But what is known is that a player not willing to buy into the Patriots way of doing business is no longer needed. At least not when the team is out of contention and the player is struggling.

Fun Fact of the Day

The New England Patriots currently sit at 2-8 through 10 games. The worst record through 10 games to make the NFL Playoffs is 3-7, accomplished twice: 2020 Washington Commanders and 2022 Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2016 the Carolina Panthers made the playoffs after beginning the season 3-6-1.
